Celebrating Dr. King and Our DEI Work Advancing His Legacy

This year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on January 15, which would have been Dr. King’s 95th birthday.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a visionary leader whose words and enduring legacy continue to inspire, over fifty years after his passing. And while there is still progress to be made, Dr. King moved the nation forward, tirelessly advocating for a more just and equitable world.

UC Davis is consistently ranked by Forbes as a great employer for diversity, which is something that our institution is very proud of, and we acknowledge that this achievement is a result of the hard work Dr. King started and our workforce advances day in, day out.

While we have many dedicated team members throughout UC Davis engaged in DEI efforts, this work is not a stand-alone mission achieved by any one individual or team - it’s up to all of us to embed the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into everything we do. It is only in this way that we create a space where we all want to work - a workplace where the principles of DEI are woven into the fiber of our being and part of our culture.

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we wish everyone an enjoyable holiday. We also encourage you to learn more about Dr. King and his legacy, and perhaps even consider participating in a local event or serving in some way that’s meaningful to you, and that acknowledges Dr. King and his work. To help, the Office for Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion has curated a list of events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the area, and on Jan. 15, the King Hall School of Law is holding various events for an MLK Day of Service and Celebration.
