When it comes to your personal safety, take all threats seriously.

When it comes to your personal safety, take all threats seriously.

In order to maintain a safe workplace, you must take all threats seriously, but remain calm.  Do not be afraid to call for help if you feel that the person in crisis may try to harm themselves or others.

Watch your body language. When an individual is in an escalated state of behavior, how you stand may affect their reaction to you.  Are you up close to them while they are escalated? Are you facing them head on or at an angle?  All of these factors will determine how quickly you can de-escalate the crisis.

Lastly, know when to walk away. The person in crisis might want to keep the argument going, but leaving the room can de-escalate the crisis situation immediately.
