The actions you take in the first three minutes of a crisis can help you to stay safe.

The actions you take in the first three minutes of a crisis can help you to stay safe.

In an active shooter situation, there are some things you can do to help you stay safe.  First, you must respond. Our body tends to react in one of three ways during a stressful situation.  Fight, flight, or freeze.  Try your best to react in a way that will keep you safe.

Next, you must assess.  If possible, try to figure out what the suspect looks like, if there have been any victims, and the location of the active shooter.  How far are they away from you?

Third, you must isolate.  Run to a safer location, hide wherever you are at, or be prepared to fight.  Lastly, notify the proper authorities.  Contact UCDPD or call 911 or 4-2555 from your cell phone depending on your physical location.  By acting swiftly and with intention, you can save yourself and others from becoming a victim in an active shooter situation.
