Stipends are temporary, non-base-building payments provided for a designated period. They are not permanently added to an employee’s base salary.
When Stipends May Be Awarded
Stipends may be provided for career employees who are:
- Temporarily assigned to perform the responsibilities of a higher-level position (e.g., acting or interim assignments), or
- Temporarily assigned additional duties that are significantly higher in scope and responsibility, and that, if assigned on a permanent basis, could warrant an upward reclassification or promotion
Additional Considerations
- Stipends are not granted while a classification review is pending or underway.
- Departments must document the process used to identify employees for stipend opportunities. This process should consider:
- Business needs of the department
- Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Qualifications of eligible employees
- Commitments to inclusive excellence and equal opportunity
- The applicable collective bargaining agreement may govern stipend duration and amount for represented employees.
- PPSM‑30 governs administrative stipends for policy-covered (non-represented) employees. Click here to view PPSM-30 UCD procedures.
- All stipend requests are subject to review and approval by Compensation Services.
