Employee-Initiated Reduction in Time (ERIT)

Employee-Initiated Reduction in Time (ERIT) is a voluntary program that allows Davis campus staff who have received departmental approval, to reduce their working hours.

Eligible Davis campus staff employees may, with Department Head approval, reduce their working hours between 5 and 50 percent, while continuing to accrue vacation and sick leave at pre-ERIT rates.

Employees may choose to use ERIT to further their work-life integration, while allowing departments to achieve temporary salary savings from the employee’s reduction in working time.

Eligibility

  • All career staff employees (regular status and probationary), except Senior Management Group members.
  • Participation for exclusively represented employees is dependent upon agreement by applicable union.
    • Participating unions include:
      • AFSCME - Service "SX" and Patient Care Technical "EX"
      • Teamsters - Clerical "CX"
      • UPTE - Research Support Professionals "RX", Technical Unit "TX" and Health Care Professionals "HX"
      • Student Health Center Physicians - "DX"
  • UC Davis Health employees (SOM, SON, Medical Center) are not eligible to participate due to operational factors.

Participation

  • Voluntary for a minimum of one month, to a maximum of 36 months.
    • When an employee is approaching 36 months on an ERIT contract, the employee may request a new ERIT contract with their department if it continues to meet the operational needs of the employee and department.
  • Requires approval from employee's department head, with work schedules subject to approval by an employee's supervisor.

Background

ERIT has proven to be a popular and effective program. The previous ERIT program, which concluded in 2014, had over 100 staff participants and achieved roughly $1 million in savings for UC Davis.

The current ERIT program has been in effect since 2017.

How to Submit an ERIT Contract

After receiving all approvals and required signatures on the contract, eligible staff should contact their local HR department in their School, College or Division, who will then work with AggieService to complete the action.
