  • Advising for Global Impact: Helping Your Students Become Globally Engaged
  • Advising for Global Impact: Helping Your Students Become Globally Engaged is a learning opportunity for staff across the UC Davis campus to develop their awareness, knowledge, and skills in understanding the role global learning plays in students’ academic, personal, and professional development. Global learning is not just about learning about other cultures. In the more comprehensive approach we use at UC Davis, global learning is about building awareness; exploring diversity in language, culture, and identity around the world; and taking action to face challenges in one’s own community. This three-and-a-half-hour course will help you focus on your own development within global learning as a UC Davis employee and will help you bolster your support for students’ global learning while they are at UC Davis.

  • AP/SD Boot Camp
  • Working with students in academic difficulty is fundamental to our role as advisors. It is therefore important that we have a detailed understanding the University’s academic standard so we can provide accurate and timely information to students who may be struggling. This workshop will build upon the foundation established in Nuts & Bolts by using case studies and group discussions to enhance participant’s understanding of the AP/SD cycle. Topics will include: • Detailed review of the GPA and Minimum Progress requirements • End of Term processing and academic standing codes • Special grade notations • Repeat policies • Exceptions • Dismissal and Readmission process

  • Developing Deeper Advising Relationships
  • Developing Deeper Advising Relationships is three-part interactive workshop that will help enhance your advising skills in working with a diverse population of students by identifying their needs in terms of cultural backgrounds and as individuals. Participants must register for all three modules. Completion of the series will result in the Cultural Competence advising certification.

  • The Foster Youth Ally Training is intended to promote an inclusive and welcoming campus environment for students, staff, and faculty who have experienced one or more days in foster care. The training will help to reduce stereotype threat, bring awareness of issues impacting those with lived experience in foster care, and resources to support students attending UC Davis.

  • Integrating Career Advising Into Your Advising Practice 
  • This workshop will provide participants with an overview of career advising competencies and how advising professionals can incorporate these into their work with students as they enter the career development process. Participants will be introduced to some key career development theory frameworks, as well as strategies and resources for how to help students in career exploration and decision making.

  • My Degree: Launch Prep Training
  • My Degree (Degree Works) is an online advising tool that allows both students and advisers to track students’ progress towards completing a degree. This training is intended for staff and faculty in an advising role who plan on using My Degree to advise students and would like to solidify knowledge garnered from previous trainings, presentations, and experiences with the system. Attendees are expected to leave training with an understanding of: • The differences between the various types of audits • Creating five different types of exceptions in a test environment • How to use the “What If” function to project a student to different major, minor, and catalog combinations Completion of this training will refresh concepts and skills built in the My Degree: Onboarding, Exceptions, and Plans course. This course is not intended for participants who have not completed the onboarding course. All participants must have completed FERPA training to take this course; if you do not have a valid FERPA training, you will not be able to access the system during the training and will be asked to leave to protect the integrity of student data.

  • This workshop provides advisors with a broad overview of the many support services and processes on campus to enable them to optimally support students as they move through the undergraduate experience. This workshop is geared to advisors who are new to campus and to those who would like a refresher on campus advising resources. 

    Course Goals: • Build a strong foundational knowledge of units and services on campus that can facilitate and enhance the student experience • Become familiar with and utilize campus services and establish strong working ties • Understand the different operating philosophies of the four colleges on campus • Understand the value of referring students to appropriate resources to meet individual needs • Provide specific information and resources related to campus services and practices

  • Do you work with students to help enhance their academic, personal, and professional success? Coaching is a communication style that can empower students to take control of their own success and be their own problem solver. Through active listening and open-ended questions, coaching aids students in building awareness, designing actions, and monitoring their progress towards holistic goals. This full day workshop begins with coaching fundamentals and ends with hands-on coaching practice - prepare to coach and be coached!

  • UndocuAdvocate Program for Educators
  • UndocuAdvocate Program for Educators is an opportunity for educators to engage in shared knowledge and opportunities regarding serving and advocating alongside the undocumented and immigrant student community at UC Davis. Through discussions on laws, policies, mental health, support and access, educators will gain a better understanding of the undergraduate and graduate undocumented and immigrant student experience. This interactive course is intended to be a first step and investment in analyzing the current resources within your unit and creating a more accessible and equitable experience for undocumented and immigrant students at UC Davis.

  • Utilizing Advising Technology
  • The Online Advising Student Information System (OASIS) is an essential tool for advisors and a primary mode of communication within the advising community. Understanding how OASIS is used to share, gather and interpret advising information can have a meaningful impact on our interactions with students and colleagues across campus. This will be an interactive workshop and is intended for professional advising staff who work primarily with undergraduates. Participants must be current OASIS users and have a basic familiarity with its functionality. Topics for this workshop include: 1) Key features and customization 2) How OASIS interacts with other campus systems 3) Proper use of notes and documents 4) Student reports and data tools 5) Additional advising resources 
    All participants must have completed FERPA training within the last two years. If you do not have a valid FERPA training, you will not be able to register for this course.

  • Working with Distressed and Distressing Students
  • You may encounter students who lead you to be concerned, fearful, or even angry due to the student’s outward behavior. The Office of Student Support and Student Judicial Affairs (OSSJA), formerly Student Judicial Affairs, is a resource to help you in these situations. Some may hesitate to contact OSSJA because they do not want to get a student in trouble. This workshop will explain the role of OSSJA, review strategies about how to interact with distressed and distressing students and describe the University's team approach to assist you. Participants will engage in small group discussions while analyzing common student case studies and learn about the resources available for both staff and students.

Participants will gain a greater awareness of working with diverse student groups, explore supporting practices, and discover new tools for creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment.     Zoom link will be sent out to registered participants. The ZSADEPT form in Banner allows department schedulers to query and update course schedule information online. Attending this training, new department schedulers will learn: • An introduction of the ZSADEPT scheduling form in Banner 9 • Course Scheduling from start to finish • Scheduling guidelines: meeting times and standard meeting times • General assignment classroom inventory and rules • Updating capabilities for course scheduling • And more… Participants will gain an understanding of the scheduling processes, scheduling functions, and procedures necessary to accurately submit course information through the Banner online scheduling form ZSADEPT.
