Staff Tuition for Education Program (STEP)

Make Your Meetings More Active

  • Include items on your meeting agenda that require participants to get out of their seats (breakout groups, stand and write ideas on an easel).
  • Choose movement friendly meeting locations (walkable neighborhoods, on-site gym, nearby park).
  • Hire a professional instructor (pilates, yoga, tai chi, stretching, Zumba) to lead a class before or during the meeting.
  • Point out the stairs and encourage attendees to use them. Consider including the location of stairs in meeting directions or putting arrows to the stairs in front of elevators.
  • Organize a group walk early in the morning, during a break or before/after dinner.
  • Consider incorporating standing ovations after each speaker to encourage participants to stand and stretch.

Standing Breaks

  • At least once an hour, participants should be encouraged to stand up to improve blood circulation, boost metabolism, and relieve physical discomfort from sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • Announce that it is fine to stand up and move around, as needed. If possible, provide raised tables for those electing to stand during the meeting.

Stretch Breaks

  • Stretch breaks help participants wake up their bodies and minds.
  • Encourage people to stand up and stretch in place.
  • Try playing a Healthy UC Davis WakeBreak video! These instructor-led stretch videos range from 4 to 15 minutes.

Breathing Exercise

  • Focused breathing is an energizing activity that can help relax and clear your mind. Simply inhale for four seconds, hold it for seven seconds, and exhale for eight seconds.

PLEASE NOTE: Thank you for your patience with us during the pause of the STEP program. At this time, the STEP program is staffed and we are working through our queue of support requests in the order in which they were received. We are also working through existing reimbursement applications in the order in which they were received.  We appreciate your continued patience as we work through these existing communications and applications.

If you have a ticket open with us and would like a status update, please reply to the most recent email thread from that ticket and refrain from starting new email threads to ensure that you are not opening new tickets, as this will slow down the response time.

What is STEP?

The UC Davis Health Staff Tuition for Education Program (STEP) is an educational reimbursement program available to eligible employees in support of their career development at UC Davis Health.  The primary focus of STEP is to encourage eligible employees in their efforts to pursue accredited matriculated degree programs (e.g. Associates, Bachelors, Masters, PhD, etc.) as well as certain accredited vocational and specialized certificate programs that prepare candidates for skilled allied health positions which are significantly utilized at UC Davis Health.

Employees may be reimbursed up to $4,000 per calendar year (January – December) for tuition and materials/books for matriculated (degree-seeking), vocational and specialized certificate programs with a $16,000 maximum lifetime benefit cap. Reimbursements are subject to be taxed in accordance with IRS guidelines and/or UC policy. Approved non-taxable tuition reimbursement requests will be paid via check. Approved taxable tuition reimbursement requests will be manually added to employee's paycheck as imputed income. Review the STEP Guidelines for more information.

Preauthorization of course of study is not required. For questions regarding the eligibility of a specific program, contact Learning & Organizational Development prior to enrollment. No reimbursements will be provided for ineligible programs. For more information, you may contact L&OD at hr-learning@ucdavis.edu.

STEP is administered by the Human Resources Learning & Organizational Development department. Guidelines and reimbursements are subject to change at any time without notice.
