Professional Development Release Time by Unit

UC Davis employees are allocated time to pursue professional development, training and continuing education opportunities.

Each employee is encouraged to pursue professional development according to the release time afforded by bargaining unit contract or policy.

PPSM 50: Professional Development – Department head, or designee, may approve career-related or job-related professional development activities for a regular status employee whose performance is at the Fully Achieved Expectations level or better, subject to scheduling, staffing, and budget considerations. 

Professional Development activities can include courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, e-learning, cross-training, coaching, an internship, or on-the-job training.

Departments may support an employee's request to participate in a development program by approving flexible or alternate work schedules, leave without pay, leave at full or part pay, full or part payment of fees and expenses, and temporary or part-time reassignment in another department.

Up to 40 hours (calendar year); prorated based upon appointment rate. Unused hours may be carried over if request was denied due to operational needs.

Article 38: Training and Development – Employee must be non-probationary, have satisfactory or better performance, & may be required to submit proof of participation.  Requests can only be for job related or University career related training.    Employees attending University courses or seminars shall be eligible for fee reductions applicable to other employees.

40 hours for doctors appointed at ninety percent (90%) or more. The 40 (forty) hours shall be prorated, based on appointment rate, for eligible doctors that work less than 90% time.

Article 7: Continuing Medical Education/Professional Development – Non-probationary career doctors are eligible for paid professional development and educational leave. Requests for leave under this Article shall be submitted in accordance with departmental procedures and are subject to operational considerations.
