Frequently Asked Questions
What does it mean that MSOs for the Future is a "pilot program?"
This is the first and pilot year of this specialized development program. As such, the number of participants will be limited to 16-24 depending on number of applicants and the availability of mentors.
Who is eligible to participate in MSOs for the Future?
The program is intended for staff who meet the following criteria:
- Minimum five years total administrative experience - at least one year at UC Davis (past probation, career status)
- Currently employed in positions such as __ Assistant III & IV, Administrative Specialist I-II, Analyst I-III, Student Affairs Officer I-III or Management Services Officer
NOTE: UC Davis Health System employees are not eligible for this pilot.
Why are people who are currently at the MSO I level eligible for a program that develops people to become MSOs?
The campus expects a significant number of MSO retirements in the next decade, many of them at the higher levels. MSO I level staff could benefit from the program because it could prepare them to compete for higher level MSO positions.
What do I have to do to apply?
Submit an application by 12:00 noon on July 21, 2005.
Do I need letter of recommendation?
Letters of recommendation are not required as part of the application and will not be considered if included in the applicant materials.
I understand that each participant will have a mentor. If I am selected as a participant, will I have to find my own mentor?
No. Qualified mentors have been identified and will be assigned to participants.
If I am selected as a participant, will I have to be away from my job for an extended period of time?
It is expected that the program will require a commitment of approximately 2 days per month for a ten-month period. Projects or internships can be scheduled around your current position. You may choose to invest additional time outside of your job for your professional growth related to this program.
Do I need to get my supervisor's permission to participate in the program?
You can submit an application without discussing the program with your supervisor and then supervisory approval for participation can be obtained after selections are made. However, communicating with your supervisor about your interest in the program creates a "partnership" and would help to ensure a greater chance of success for you, your department and UC Davis.
What can I expect to learn in this program?
The program is structured according to the competency model developed at UC Davis for academic MSO positions and is designed to develop and strengthen six competencies as follows:
- Leadership
- Business and Financial Analysis
- Analysis and Planning
- Human Resource Development
- Community Building
- Communication
If I successfully complete this program will I be guaranteed a job as an MSO in an academic unit?
This is a development program, not a program that guarantees job placement. By focusing on MSO competencies, it is hoped that participants in the program will be competitive candidates for MSO positions.
