This course is intended for staff who work in academic departments or research units that hire international faculty and researchers. Participants will learn about U.S. immigration regulations and campus policy that govern hiring non-U.S. citizens, and how they can work with the staff at SISS to facilitate an international hire. Topics covered include determining the right visa category for the new hire, the department's role in obtaining a new visa and extending a person's visa or status, and how to help international faculty/researchers in this complex process.At the end of the workshop, participants will:
- Know what visa categories UCD uses for nonimmigrant employees, and the general requirements for each category
- Understand the process necessary to work with SISS to apply for an initial H, J, O or TN visa
- Understand the process necessary to work with SISS to apply for an extension of the H, J, O or TN visa
